I saw it quite awhile ago, and in stumbling upon it in RT, I realize I remember it all. It was compelling, haunting and gorgeous to look at. It is very much a slow-burn for the majority of the runtime, as main character Lockheart investigates the Sanitarium institution, and clues are dropped throughout that eventually lead to the finale.I have heard many complain about the ending to this film, but to be perfectly honest, I found the resolution to be suprisingly enjoyable. Many have said it makes no sense, but if you pay attention to the clues throughout, I felt it actually makes perfect sense to reach the finale that it does. At worst, there are a few minor holes, but they can filled pretty easily with a bit of basic common sense thought, in my humble opinion.I had heard some people claim this film contained "intense body horror", but I assure you there is nothing of the sort. Without giving too much away, the worst you see are dried out bodies, most of which are covered by blankets, so you only see them from the neck up. There are also some nude bodies shown, but they appear very normal, so I'm not 100% sure where people are getting "body horror" from.All in all, if you like bizzare thrillers, with a fantasy-esqe twist, this may be for you. If you are looking for horror, look elsewhere, because you definitely won't find it here. Unless you have a phobia of eels, then maybe. I understand why it flopped, with movie theater prices these days i wouldnt have been terribly happy either, but I do think the cinematography would have been incredible on the big screen. Ending could have been punchier, but I'm not mad at it. Could see this becoming a comfort watch for me. The plot ISNT predictable at all, I was surprised by every reveal and it keeps you guessing the whole movie.
