December 2023 will see the arrival of the final big releases of the year, among them Hayao Miyazaki’s latest movie, the final movie in the DC Extended Universe, the origin story of Willy Wonka, the tragic story of the Von Erich family, and more. November welcomed a variety of movies from different genres, including some highly anticipated movies, such as Sofia Coppola’s Priscilla, Nia DaCosta’s The Marvels, the dystopian adventure The Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds & Snakes, Disney’s Wish, and Ridley Scott’s Napoleon.

Out of November’s theatrical releases, two movies will be available to stream in December: Todd Haynes’ May December, available to stream on Netflix on December 1, and Bradley Cooper’s Maestro, which will arrive on Netflix on December 20. Renaissance: A Film by Beyoncé will screen for at least four weekends, and will be available in IMAX and Dolby Cinema.

The Boy and the Heron

The Boy and the Heron is a Japanese animated fantasy movie written and directed by Hayao Miyazaki. The Boy and the Heron is the story of Mahito Maki, a 12-year-old boy who moves from Tokyo to the countryside during the Pacific War after his mother’s death. Although struggling to settle in his new town, once there Mahito finds an abandoned tower through which he enters a fantasy world with a talking grey heron, who informs him that his mother is still alive. The English voice cast of The Boy and the Heron features Luca Padovan, Robert Pattinson, Karen f*ckuhara, Gemma Chan, Christian Bale, Mark Hamill, Florence Pugh, Willem Dafoe, and Dave Bautista.

The movie takes its title from the 1937 novel of the same name by Genzaburō Yoshino, but it’s an original story unrelated to it.

Poor Things

Release date: December 8, 2023

Poor Things is a black comedy fantasy movie directed by Yorgos Lanthimos and based on the 1992 novel of the same name by Alasdair Gray. Poor Things follows Bella Baxter (Emma Stone), a young woman brought back to life by her guardian, scientist Godwin Baxter (Willem Dafoe). Bella is eager to learn about the world around her, but she can’t do much under Baxter’s protection. Her desire to see more leads her to run off with Duncan Wedderburn (Mark Ruffalo), a slick and debauched lawyer. Also starring in Poor Things are Ramy Youssef, Christopher Abbott, Jerrod Carmichael, and Margaret Qualley.

Eileen

Eileen is a psychological thriller directed by William Oldroyd and based on the 2015 novel of the same name by Ottessa Moshfegh. Set in 1960s Boston, Eileen follows Eileen Dunlop (Thomasin McKenzie), a young woman working at a prison where she meets a captivating counselor named Rebecca (Anne Hathaway), who helps her discover new facets of her personality, but that might also lead her into something truly dangerous. Also starring in Eileen are Shea Whigham, Marin Ireland, Owen Teague, and Jefferson White.

Eileen will begin with a limited theatrical release on December 1 before expanding wide on December 8.

Wonka

Release date: December 15, 2023

Wonka is a musical fantasy movie directed by Paul King and based on the characters created by Roald Dahl. Wonka explores the origin story of famous and eccentric chocolatier Willy Wonka (Timothée Chalamet), from his days as a young adult selling chocolate in a small shop to becoming the eccentric genius known all over the world for his unique candies. Also starring in Wonka are Keegan-Michael Key, Calah Lane, Sally Hawkins, Rowan Atkinson, Paterson Joseph, and Matt Lucas.

Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom

Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom is the sequel to 2018’s Aquaman, as well as the final installment in the DC Extended Universe before the DC Universe reboot. Directed by James Wan, Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom is set many years after the events of the first film and reunites viewers with Arthur Curry (Jason Momoa), who is forced to protect Atlantis and his loved ones from devastation after David Kane a.k.a. Black Manta (Yahya Abdul-Mateen II) obtains the cursed Black Trident and unleashes an ancient power. In order to protect Atlantis, Arthur will have to team up with his imprisoned brother, Orm (Patrick Wilson).

Migration

Migration is an animated comedy movie directed by Benjamin Renner. Migration tells the story of a family of mallards led by dad Mack (voiced by Kumail Nanjiani), who is happy to keep his family safe paddling around their New England pond, but mom Pam (Elizabeth Banks) wants to show their kids the rest of the world. After meeting a migrating duck, Pam persuades Mack to go on a family trip to Jamaica, but it won’t be an easy journey. Also part of Migration’s voice cast are Awkwafina, Keegan-Michael Key, David Mitchell, Carol Kane, and Danny DeVito.

The Iron Claw

The Iron Claw is a biographical sports drama directed by Sean Durkin and based on the life of professional wrestler Kevin Von Erich and the Von Erich family, a dynasty of professional wrestlers from Texas. The Iron Claw follows the family’s success throughout the 1980s, including how they popularized the Iron Claw professional wrestling hold. Unfortunately, the family was believed to be cursed, as they dealt with a number of unbearable personal tragedies. Starring in The Iron Claw are Zac Efron as Kevin Von Erich, Jeremy Allen White as Kerry Von Erich, Harris Dickinson as David Von Erich, Maura Tierney as Doris Von Erich, and Lily James as Pam Adkisson.

The Color Purple is the second adaptation of Walker’s novel, the first one being the 1985 version directed by Steven Spielberg and starring Whoopi Goldberg and Oprah Winfrey.
